Doug works as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at Hutt Hospital in the role of the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist (Emerg) having set up the Minor Injury management pathway for nurse practitioners. As well as having professional academic qualifications, Doug has completed post-graduate qualifications in Sports Medicine, Football Medicine and Resuscitation. Doug has completed doctorates in Injury Epidemiology (Auckland University of Technology), Head impact biomechanics and sports related concussion (Auckland University of Technology) and women’s rugby union injuries (Massey University). Doug is an active researcher in women’s head injuries with areas of interest in domestic violence / intimate partner violence, women’s concussion recovery and physical recovery of concussion. Doug is also a retired military veteran having served in the Royal New Zealand Navy and the Royal New Zealand Army Nursing Corps.

Having played rugby league and represented the New Zealand Defence Force in this sport, Doug also volunteers for sports teams as their primary medic and has represented New Zealand, France, Russia, Tonga, Fiji, and Samoa in rugby league, is the regional representative medic for the women’s rugby league team and is the track medic for women’s flat track roller derby teams working with local clubs and nationally for the women’s competition.

Doug is an active researcher and has been recognized in the top 0.5 percent of experts worldwide on brain concussion and football codes by Expertscape

Doug is the recipient of Te Amorangi National Māori Academy Excellence Award, PhD New Investigator Award – AUT University and PhD Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences Award for translation of thesis to publication
