Joseph Maroon

Dr. Maroon is the Professor and Vice Chairman of Neurosurgery and Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh. At Indiana University he was a Scholastic All American in football and received his medical and neurosurgical education at Indiana, Oxford (England), Georgetown, and University of Vermont.

He has been the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 40 years. He is a member of the NFL Head, Neck and Spine Committee, and the former Medical Director now consultant to the World Wrestling Entertainment Corporation (WWE). He is the Scientific Chairman of the Chuck Noll Foundation for prevention of brain injuries in sports.

He co-developed the ImPact neurocognitive test, the standard of care for return to play in all contact sports, and changed the management of sport concussions nationally with over 25 million tests performed. For his contributions he was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for individuals who have made it their mission to share with those less fortunate, their knowledge, indomitable courage, compassion, unique talents and selfless generosity. This was read into the Congressional Record. Also, he received the Indiana University Distinguished Alumni Service Award, Jerome Bettis Humanitarian of the Year Award and was inducted into the Lou Holtz Hall of Fame with Joe Montana and Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He has published 350 peer reviewed papers, 54 book chapters, and six books.

Dr. Maroon is presently involved with clinical trials in chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Parkinson’s disease, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

He is a nationally ranked triathlete and has competed in 80 triathlons and 8 ironman distances, including the 5X World Triathlon Championship in Kona, Hawaii
