Kevin Bernstein

MD, MMS, FAAFP

Commander Kevin Bernstein, MD, MMS, CAQSM, FAAFP is a native of Deer Park, New York.

He is currently the Director of Sports Medicine for Naval Special Warfare Group TWO in Virginia Beach, VA. He is Chairman of the Human Performance Sub-Community for Navy Medicine’s Neuro-Musculoskeletal Readiness Community and Specialty Leader for Navy Primary Care Sports Medicine, managing a community of fifty sports medicine physicians stationed around the world. He is qualified as a Navy Human Performance Specialist and Surface Warfare Medical Department Officer.

He received his Bachelor of Science in pre-medicine with minors in biology and Jewish studies from the Pennsylvania State University, and his Master of Medical Science and Medical Degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. He completed residency training at Naval Hospital Pensacola where he served as Chief Resident, and fellowship training in Sports Medicine at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton.

After residency, he reported to Fleet Surgical Team SEVEN forward-deployed 24 months as staff Family Physician on 5 patrols augmenting medical support aboard 3 large deck amphibious platforms (LHA 5, LHD 6, LCC-19) in support of amphibious and expeditionary exercises in 7th Fleet.

After fellowship, he reported to Naval Branch Health Clinic, Mayport, FL as Senior Medical Officer and Sports Medicine faculty for Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s Family Medicine Residency Program. He then reported to Naval Health Clinic Annapolis, serving as Team Physician for 10 NCAA Division 1 teams including Navy football, Director for Public Health overseeing the public health mission at strategically located bases across 3 states, Chair of the Medical Executive Committee, and Sports Medicine faculty for 5 GME residency programs and USUHS medical students as Assistant Professor of Family Medicine.

He is Past-President for the Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians and previously served on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), representing over 120,000 Family Medicine Physicians and Medical Student Members. He also serves as AAFP Delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA), Uniformed Services Delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates, and Trustee on the USAFP Foundation Board of Trustees, which he created during his term as USAFP President.

He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He has presented and published chapters, articles, and research nationally. His military decorations include 2 Meritorious Service Medals, 2 Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
